He is surprised, however, when he finds himself in the body of a tortoise, stripped of his divine powers, except for the ability to singe eyebrows with tiny thunderbolts. The Great God Om tries to manifest himself once more in the world, as the time of his Eighth Prophet is nigh. In Omnian tradition there is a new Prophet every two hundred years. Om was once a Small God, but managed to speak to a shepherd, gained believers (despite the shepherd being stoned to death) and took over from Ur-Gilash as the God of what became Omnia. ![]() Omnians believe in a single god, Om, though the Discworld has many gods, including the billions of Small Gods who exist as points of desire searching for believers. ![]() The Discworld is flat and is orbited by its sun, but Omnian doctrine says that the world is round and orbits the sun. Omnia is a theocracy based on the Seven Books of the Prophets of Om. In the process, it satirises religious institutions, people, and practices, and the role of religion in political life. It tells the origin of the god Om, and his relations with his prophet, the reformer Brutha. Small Gods is the thirteenth of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, published in 1992. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Long regarded as physicians' handmaidens, they are now, reports Gordon, seen as expendable luxuries by the managers of for-profit hospitals seeking to maximize their bottom line. The catch is, bedside RNs are an endangered species. Nursing, she reminds us, is the largest profession in health care and the largest female profession in America. Empathic, sensitive, knowledgeable, and conscientious, they seem exceptional, but Gordon stresses that there are hundreds of thousands like them. By describing in detail the work of three highly skilled and experienced RNs-together they have a total of more than 50 years of experience-Gordon shows us nursing at its very best. Gordon shows us Nancy dealing with angry, frightened patients, Jeannie sharing her wisdom with younger nurses, and Ellen bicycling to the homes of Boston's homebound elderly poor. At Boston's Beth Israel Hospital, Gordon (Off Balance: The Real World of Ballet, 1983 Prisoners of Men's Dreams: Striking Out for a New Feminism, 1990 etc.) spent over two years following the daily routines of three registered nurses: Nancy Rumplik, an outpatient nurse in an ambulatory cancer clinic Jeannie Chaisson, a clinical nurse specialist on a general medical floor and Ellen Kitchen, a nurse-practitioner in the hospital's home-care service. Lavish praise for the nursing profession interwoven with dire warnings about the threat to its future posed by the growth of managed care. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Before there was Eleanor & Park, there was Nick & Norah, and now the sexy. It is uncommon to read comprehensively about football, history and politics all in one place but with Montague’s fourth book, his latest piece of investigative journalism, you are offered a chance to do just that. That said, football fanaticism still has a darker side. Nowadays, ultra-groups are spaces for people with political ideas outside the norm, providing the opportunity to meet more likeminded fans to enjoy football with. These movements can no longer be straightforwardly defined or categorised as typically right-wing, paramilitary or criminal firms associated with world football.
